The Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84 is kicking off its centennial year by inviting the public to a celebration with the commander, Mike Eckburg, from 4:30-7 p.m. June 5, at Ballydoyle Irish Pub, 28 W. New York St. There will be free snacks and a preview of events planned for 2019.

“We have been serving the Aurora veterans for 100 years, and will continue into the next 100 years” Eckburg said.

With a current membership of more than 300 people, the Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post has been a supporter of Youth Baseball, the American Legion Band, and Boys and Girls State Legion organizations. The post is a co-host, with the City of Aurora, of the Independence Day parade and in addition has been a loyal supporter of the Aurora Historical Society.

“There is so much that the (post) does for our veterans, including partnering with the student veteran organizations in Aurora,” Eckburg said. “Sometimes we don’t promote ourselves as much as we should. I would hope everyone can attend and help us kick off our centennial celebration and become involved in helping those who proudly served our country in the armed services.”

Post 84 was founded in 1919 and is one of the oldest posts in Illinois. The name is in memory of Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt, who was killed in World War I in aerial combat over France on July 14, 1918, which is Bastille Day, the French Independence Day.

The American Legion Band will perform at the Tanner House on July 4, 2019.
