Laura McDowell Hopper, a historian, curator, writer and quilter, will speak about quilts and quilting at the Aurora Historical Society’s fall exhibit at the Pierce Art and History Center on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at 3:00pm.
The associate editor of Quiltfolk magazine and a textile expert who has worked at the Newberry Library, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the Michigan State University Museum and the Pick Museum at Northern Illinois University, among others, Hopper has been honored for her work as a curator. Her own handiwork as a quilter has been featured in books and film.
Although an expert on contemporary quilts, Hopper will also discuss the radical political statements that may have been hidden in the straightforward designs of 19th and 20th century quilts.
Tickets for the lecture are $5 for historical society members and $8 for non-members. They must be prepaid either online, by calling 630-906-0650, or by stopping in at the exhibit. Open hours are Wednesday to Friday, Noon – 4 pm and Saturday 10 am – 4 pm.
After October 12, Pierce Center hours on Saturdays will be Noon – 4 pm. The Pierce Center is located at 20 East Downer Place in Aurora, 60505. Parking is available across the street in the city garage.
